Waving off loved ones

On the observation deck at Asahikawa Airport.This is a small airport in northern Hokkaido with only a handful of flights each day. But like all other airports in Japan, it has a very nice viewing area on the roof top of the terminal. What is perhaps interesting is that there are almost no visitor on the deck except when a Skymark flight departs. I figured since Skymark only operates flights to Tokyo Narita from Asahikawa, passengers going there instead of Haneda, which is much closer to downtown Tokyo, probably suggests they are connecting to an international flight out of the country, hence the gathering of families and friends on the deck to say farewell one more time. Everyone waved hard and long, not even sure if their loved ones are on the right side of the aircraft to see them. Of course that is not the point. It gets emotional at times on the departure level. It is certainly a very different story on the arrival hall where people are reunited. Airports are fascinating, not only for the planes.

B-LJA Hong Kong Trader

The very much anticipated B-LJA finally made it to Hong Kong! Delivery flight, with call sign Cathay 3337 as usual, departed PAE at 2:32pm PST on November 15th for a 14-hour cross Pacific journey. It reached HKG at 8:46pm local time (already November 16th due to time difference.) I took the 5:25pm ferry to SLW in the hope that LJA will land on the south runway and I'll be able to snap a few shots. Well, you guessed it - north runway it went. Nonetheless it was quite an experience taking pictures standing in the middle of nowhere in almost complete darkness. Anyway, this shot was taken at around 9:50pm when it was parked in bay C33 on the cargo apron.The walk back to Tung Chung, with a heavy backpack and a tripod on the shoulder, was the part that I did not look forward to.

FedEx evening arrival

Daylights are getting shorter and shorter by the day as winter approaches. FedEx 169 in this picture is a daily arrival at just after 6pm; lighting condition through our the year range from very good late afternoon light, during the sunset magic hours, to way too dark for pictures. Well clearly we are now in the way-too-dark-for-pictures time of the year.
